Free your Viking friends encased in ice - Time Waster
Filed under: Fun, Games, Internet, Time-Wasters, Web
Ice Breaker is an addictive little Flash game where your goal is to free your Viking comrades from their icy prisons. To do it, slice off chunks of ice so that they slide (or fall) into the waiting ship. The brutish fellow with the hammer will then break the ice and free his friends.
It's a simple enough game, but make sure you eyeball the course before you cut a viking loose - you may need to modify his path first so he doesn't, say, fall into a nasty crevasse as in the screenshot. Fortunately, you can restart the level and try again.

The powerful, versatile, and free video encoding and playback app SUPER has released a new version that adds tons of new functionality to the already powerful application. If you're not familiar with the program, it's based on Open Source projects like FFMpeg, libavcodec, MPlayer, and MEncoder and can play or convert just about any video file - even to formats for the Nintendo DS and PSP.
While the "everything on one page" interface hasn't changed, a number of new encoding and play features have been added or improved, like WMV9, FLAC, and OGG support.
One downside to SUPER is the horribly constructed website. There's not a clear location for the download, so I'll save you some hassle: go to this page, press your end key and look for Download SUPER @ setup file.

A new trojan once again underscores the importance of exercising caution when downloading. Disguised as a keygen, Troj/Qhost-AC is one of the strangest pieces of malware I've seen. The trojan doesn't appear to be particularly malicious. Its mission: to prevent you from downloading torrents from PirateBay and Mininova, keep you from reading the forums at SuprBay, and the remind you that you shouldn't be downloading illegally.
A couple modifications to your hosts file are made that point the affected domains to your machine. Removal is fairly quick and painless - just get rid of the entries from your hosts file. If you need help, check out the helpful FAQ on MVPS.org.
Maybe this is the RIAA's new sinister plan: instead of suing everyone, they're just going to threaten, guilt trip, and annoy downloaders into submission. Whatever it is, there's more than a little irony in hiding something with "good intentions" inside a keygen inside a torrent.
Unsure about a torrent you were planning to download? Check out Vertor and see if they've indexed its contents first.

First, there were blog comments. But then there were Twitter, FriendFeed, Disqus, Google BlogSearch, and a host of other ways people could attach feedback to a particular URL. YackTrack is a service that aims to help you see all of these different types of comments in the same place. Just enter a URL, and it will return every comment on that URL that it can find across multiple services.YackTrack is just getting started, so new features are rolling out quickly. There's already a bookmarklet you can use to avoid unnecessary copying and pasting, and a FeedFlare you can use to track a given URL. On top of that, YackTrack features a "chatter" search, so you can see what people around the web are saying about any given search term. I tested it out with my name, and it looks like a fantastic ego-surfing tool. It's probably even more useful if you're in customer relations and want to track what people are saying about your product and service. You can even subscribe to the search results as an RSS feed.

Phishers are up to the same old tricks, with a new target: your Twitter password. Several Twitter users received a direct message today that included a Blogspot link purporting to be about "a funny blog about you!" They clicked on it and found themselves redirected to a spoofed Twitter login page that grabs passwords and may use your account to propagate the phishing messages to more users. To be safe, don't click on suspicious links, even though they're coming from people you follow on Twitter, and don't compulsively enter your login info without checking to make sure you're actually on a Twitter.com domain. This scam is particularly tricky because of the nature of direct messages, which have to come from people you've allowed to contact you. The Twitter Eng and Ops teams are aware of the problem, according to a tweet from Twitter's Biz Stone, and a warning message has been added on the Twitter homepage.

If you've always got GMail open in one of your Firefox tabs, you can't always see the unread message count - when you have a whole slew of other tabs open, for example.Install the Gmail Unread Message Count in Favicon script for Greasemonkey, and that problem is solved. The script overlays the current count on Gmail's envelope icon and it will display even when you're not parked at your Inbox. It's nice to be able to keep tabs on new messages without tabbing back to Gmail.
The icon will also become brighter as the number of unread messages increases. You will, of course, need to have the Greasemonkey addon installed as well.
