Share1t provides simple, free file hosting up to 100mb
Filed under: Internet, E-mail, Web services, Browsers, Web
The Share1t home page is totally uncluttered, with nothing but a thin information header at the top, banner ad in the footer, and a nice, big browse-and-upload form right in the middle.
After uploading your file, you'll be given a truncated URL, HTML and BBCode for embedding your file, and an option to email the link to the file. It only handles one address at a time, but the Ajax form provides the option to enter another recipient once your message has been sent.
Files of up to 100mb can be uploaded and will remain on the site for 15 days. The TOS does declare, however, that a file may be downloaded a "reasonable number of times" after which point it may automatically be deleted, though the specific number isn't mentioned.
With that in mind, Share1t is probably best suited to small(ish) uploads that you'd like to share with a few select people. Still, it's an uncomplicated, fast service and handy enough to bookmark just in case.
Thanks, William!

Filed under: Google, Open Source, Mobile, Android
When the T-Mobile G1, the first phone running Google's Android mobile platform, was released two months ago, its greatest asset -- the physical QWERTY keyboard -- also wound up being the devices greatest deficit. Having a physical keyboard is great, especially for e-mail -- but being forced to open up the device every time you want to navigate to a new web page or perform a quick web search is a PITA. I'll be honest: it sucks hardcore.
As our brethren at Engadget pointed out last week, Google has already started work on a new branch of Android, codenamed "cupcake" - which will bring, among other improvements. an actual on-screen keyboard to the platform. SWEET. And although Nokia Internet Tablet owners can already install the latest hotness on their devices (obviously, at your own peril - I doubt it will harm your hardware, but this is still developmental stuff), as you can see from the video above, it looks like developmental G1 units have been able to successfully install some of the new hotness as well.
This is great, great news for Android, the G1 and future handsets.

VirtualBox is an open source virtualization application that lets you run one operating system inside another. For free. Say, for example you want to check out a new Linux distribution but you don't want to go through the trouble of rebooting your computer. Simple. Just download the disc image for Ubuntu, Fedora, or whatever OS you want to try out, fire up VirtualBox and run create a virtual machine that will let you run the disc image in a window on your desktop.VirtualBox 2.1 was released last week, and it adds a bunch of new features, including:
- Ability to load 64-bit guest operating systems on host machines running 32-bit operating systems
- Experimental 3D acceleration via OpenGL on 32-bit Windows guest systems
- Easier setup for networking on Windows and Linux host systems

Filed under: Photo, Utilities, Macintosh, Freeware, Beta
Now that I've finally gotten my hands on a Mac, I've got to start looking for apps that provide the same functionality I'm accustomed to in Windows. First on my list: a good, free screenshot program that provides basic editing functions.Yes, OSX's Grab tool is a good starting point, but I like to be able to crop, edit, add arrows and callouts, and perform other similar chores without having to launch something like Photoshop or GIMP.
Voila provides all the features I'm after. Apart from full screen, window, region, and menu capturing, it also offers an array of editing and notation functions. Arrows, callouts, shapes, and text are easy to add - and text can be edited after it's placed unlike a lot of similar applications. It also supports one-click exporting to iPhoto and Mail.
One glaring omission is resizing. It's something I use all the time, so its absence is a bit of an inconvenience.
The beta version is currently free, though the FAQ states that Voila will indeed become a commercial app. I'm just getting started on my Mac, so if you've got a better free alternative share it in the comments!

Filed under: Windows Mobile, Browsers, Mobile
Microsoft has said it does not plan to make Internet Explorer Mobile 6 available to end users as a direct download. In other words, if you want IE 6 on your mobile phone, you're going to have to buy a new phone. Because it won't run on existing devices. Instead, Microsoft will work with OEMs to load the updated browser on phones that will be released in the not too distant future. But there's good news for impatient Windows Mobile users. A member of the MoDaCo forums has built a custom ROM for the HTC Touch HD that comes with Internet Explorer 6 preloaded. In other words, it's possible to get the browser running on existing hardware. And if a hacker can do it, there's no reason we couldn't eventually see phone makers distribute the software as a download. Sure, it's not likely, but it's certainly possible.
In the meantime, if you have a Touch HD and you're looking for a browser capable of full desktop views and the same rendering engine used in Internet Explorer 6, you might want to give the potentially warranty-voiding ROM a try. If you're less adventerous you might want to settle for Opera Mobile, which is entirely legal and has the added benefit of supporting tabbed browsing.
